Tools and Simple Household Fixes
Aligned to CTE:CC-3 — Jump$tart National Standards in K-12 Personal Finance Education & Advance CTE Career Clusters.

What this lesson teaches
A handful of basic tools and the knowledge of what they are for solves a surprising number of household problems. Using the right tool is safer and faster than forcing the wrong one. Knowing when a job is beyond you is part of the skill, not the opposite of it.
Worked examples
Example 1
A screwdriver tip that matches the screw head turns it cleanly. The wrong size slips and chews up the screw so nobody can remove it later.
Example 2
A loose cabinet handle is usually one screw tightened from the inside — a two-minute fix that otherwise gets worse for months.
Example 3
Anything involving gas, or wiring behind a wall, is a job for a licensed tradesperson. Recognizing that line is what keeps people safe.
Practice questions
- Name four basic tools and one job each is for.
- Find one loose screw in your home and report what tool it needs.
- Name two jobs that should always go to a licensed professional.
