Industrialization and Its Social Impact

Aligned to C3.D2.His — C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards.

What this lesson teaches

The Industrial Revolution replaced hand tools and farm work with machines and factories. It produced goods faster and grew cities, but it also brought harsh conditions, child labor, and a sharp divide between owners and workers — sparking reforms and labor unions.

Worked example

Before factories, a family might weave cloth by hand at home. A power loom in a textile mill produced far more cloth — but workers, including children, labored long hours in dangerous conditions for low pay.

Practice questions

  1. Name one benefit and one problem caused by industrialization.
  2. Why did cities grow during the Industrial Revolution?
  3. What were labor unions trying to change?
