What this lesson teaches
After the costly French and Indian War, Britain ended its policy of salutary neglect and taxed the colonies to raise money. Colonists protested taxes like the Stamp Act (1765) and Tea Act, arguing there should be 'no taxation without representation' in Parliament.
Worked example
In December 1773, the Sons of Liberty disguised themselves and dumped 342 chests of British tea into Boston Harbor to protest the Tea Act. Britain responded with the Intolerable Acts, closing the port and pushing the colonies toward open rebellion.
