What this lesson teaches

The Renaissance ('rebirth') was a flowering of art, learning, and ideas that began in Italy in the 1300s and drew on rediscovered Greek and Roman texts, many preserved by Muslim scholars. Its thinkers championed humanism, focusing on human potential, achievement, and the study of the individual.

Worked example

Leonardo da Vinci embodied the 'Renaissance man,' filling notebooks with anatomy studies, flying-machine designs, and paintings like the Mona Lisa.
