Aligned to C3.D2.Eco.1 — C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards.
What this lesson teaches
As medieval trade revived, towns grew and craft workers formed guilds, associations that controlled quality, prices, and training in a trade. Expanding commerce created new financial tools such as banking, bills of exchange, and credit, a shift historians call the Commercial Revolution.
Worked example
The Medici family of Florence built a banking empire in the 1400s, lending money across Europe and even funding Renaissance artists.
Practice questions
- What was a guild, and name one thing it controlled for its members.
- Explain how new tools like banking and credit made long-distance trade easier.
- Analyze how the growth of trade and towns changed the older feudal economy.
