What this lesson teaches
Across many ecosystems, organisms interact in repeating patterns: competition for the same resource, predation where one eats another, and mutualism where both benefit. Recognizing these patterns lets you predict interactions in a new ecosystem.
Worked example
A clownfish and sea anemone help each other — the fish is protected and the anemone gets cleaned — a mutualism that mirrors how bees and flowers help each other on land, showing the same interaction pattern in very different places.
Practice questions
- Watch ants near a plant and decide whether they compete, prey, or cooperate with what they meet.
- Sort a list of species pairs into competition, predation, or mutualism.
- Construct an explanation predicting what kind of interaction two new species might have based on patterns you have seen elsewhere.

Patrones en cómo interactúan las especies
En muchos ecosistemas, los organismos interactúan en patrones que se repiten: competencia por el mismo recurso, depredación donde uno se come a otro, y mutualismo donde ambos se benefician. Reconocer estos patrones te permite predecir interacciones en un ecosistema nuevo.
Ejemplo: Un pez payaso y una anémona de mar se ayudan mutuamente — el pez queda protegido y la anémona se mantiene limpia — un mutualismo que refleja cómo las abejas y las flores se ayudan en tierra, mostrando el mismo patrón de interacción en lugares muy distintos.
