Behaviors and Structures That Help Reproduction

Aligned to MS-LS1-4 — Next Generation Science Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Many animal behaviors and plant structures exist because they raise the chance of producing offspring. Behaviors like nest-building, courtship displays, and protecting young, and structures like brightly colored flowers or sticky pollen, all increase reproductive success.

Worked example

A flower's bright petals and sweet nectar attract bees; as a bee feeds, pollen sticks to its body and travels to the next flower, fertilizing it — the flower's structure directly increases how many seeds it can make.

Practice questions

  1. Observe a flower and list the parts that might attract an insect or bird.
  2. Model how pollen moves between two flowers using a cotton swab as a pretend pollinator.
  3. Explain, using evidence, why a bird species that guards its eggs may leave more surviving offspring than one that does not.
