Reading & Writing in the Content Areas

Aligned to RH.6-8 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

What this lesson teaches

When reading history and science sources, separate established facts from the author's opinion or interpretation, cite evidence, and find the central idea. Then write arguments and explanations grounded in that content.

Worked example

An article says, 'The river flooded in 1927 (fact). This proves the dam was a mistake (interpretation).' You can tell the dated event apart from the author's claim about it.

Practice questions

  1. Read a source and separate a fact from an interpretation.
  2. Cite evidence for the central idea of a science text.
  3. Write an explanation using two facts from a source.
