What this lesson teaches
Grade 7 literature includes longer sentences, older language, and layered meaning. Use strategies — reread, track characters, look up words — to comprehend challenging texts independently.
Worked example
A dense opening line hides its subject: 'Weary from the road, into the dim inn stumbled a stranger.' Rearranged: 'A stranger, weary from the road, stumbled into the dim inn.' Reordering clarifies it.
Practice questions
- When a sentence confuses you in a story, reread it and restate it in your own words.
- Keep a short list of characters and one fact about each as you read a longer text.
- After a hard chapter, write two sentences summarizing what happened.
