Theme and Objective Summary
Aligned to RL.7.2 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
What this lesson teaches
A theme is the big idea about life a story reveals, and it develops as events unfold. An objective summary retells key events without your opinions.
Worked example
A boy refuses help, fails, then finally accepts a friend's aid and succeeds. Theme: pride can block growth until we learn to lean on others. Objective summary: states these events, not 'the boy was foolish.'
Practice questions
- Name one theme in a story you're reading and point to two moments where it grows clearer.
- Write a three-sentence summary of the plot using only facts, no opinions.
- Explain how the ending changes or deepens the theme you identified.
