Reading Grade-Level Nonfiction

Aligned to RI.7.10 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

What this lesson teaches

Grade 7 nonfiction includes essays, speeches, and articles with dense facts and vocabulary. Use strategies — headings, rereading, note-taking — to comprehend literary nonfiction independently.

Worked example

A paragraph packed with statistics feels overwhelming. Slow down: jot 'main point' in the margin, then list the two numbers that matter most. Note-taking turns a wall of facts into clear ideas.

Practice questions

  1. Before reading an article, skim the headings and predict what it will cover.
  2. While reading, write one margin note summarizing each section.
  3. After finishing, restate the author's main point in your own words.
