Economic Choices in Ancient Societies

What this lesson teaches
Because resources are limited (scarcity), every society must choose how to use them. Ancient peoples specialized — doing the work they did best — and traded for the rest. At first they used barter, swapping goods directly, but this was clumsy, so societies invented money as a common measure of value that everyone would accept.
Worked example
The kingdom of Lydia (in modern Turkey) struck some of the world's first coins from a gold-silver alloy around 600 BCE. Stamped coins let a trader sell grain for coins and later buy tools, instead of needing someone who happened to want grain and had tools to swap.

Como los recursos son limitados (escasez), toda sociedad debe elegir cómo usarlos. Los pueblos antiguos se especializaban —hacían el trabajo que mejor sabían hacer— y comerciaban por lo demás. Al principio usaban el trueque, intercambiando bienes directamente, pero era engorroso, así que las sociedades inventaron el dinero como una medida común de valor que todos aceptarían.
Ejemplo: El reino de Lidia (en la actual Turquía) acuñó algunas de las primeras monedas del mundo con una aleación de oro y plata hacia el año 600 a.C. Las monedas acuñadas permitían a un comerciante vender grano por monedas y comprar herramientas más tarde, en lugar de necesitar a alguien que justo quisiera grano y tuviera herramientas para cambiar.
