Testing and Improving Through Iteration

What this lesson teaches

Engineers rarely get a design right the first try. They build a model, test it to generate data, change one thing based on what they learn, and test again. Each loop of this iteration makes the design a little better, so a working solution is built up through repeated cycles.

Worked example

A team building an egg-drop container tests version 1 and the egg cracks. The data (a broken shell) points to too little padding, so they add cushioning for version 2, which survives a low drop but not a high one. Version 3 adds a parachute — each test guided the next change until it worked.

Practice questions

  1. Build a simple structure (like a paper tower) and test how much weight it holds.
  2. Change one part based on your result, test again, and record whether it improved.
  3. Explain why changing only one thing at a time makes it easier to learn from each test.
