How the Parts Build the Whole
Aligned to RL.6.5 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
What this lesson teaches
A single sentence, stanza, or scene has a job in the larger text — it can set up a conflict, reveal a character, or turn the plot. Analyze what one part contributes and how removing it would change the whole.
Worked example
A one-line scene where a character quietly pockets a key seems minor, but it plants the escape that resolves the story. Cut that scene and the ending has no setup — proof the part carries the plot forward.
Practice questions
- Pick one short scene or stanza and state its job in the whole text.
- Explain what the reader would miss if it were removed.
- Show how that part connects to the story's theme or turning point.

Como las Partes Construyen el Todo
Una sola oracion, estrofa o escena cumple una funcion dentro del texto completo: puede plantear un conflicto, revelar a un personaje o dar un giro a la trama. Analiza que aporta una parte y como cambiaria el todo si la quitaras.
Ejemplo: Una escena de una linea en la que un personaje guarda una llave en el bolsillo parece menor, pero prepara la fuga que resuelve la historia. Quita esa escena y el final se queda sin preparacion — prueba de que la parte impulsa la trama.
