How the Parts Build the Whole
Aligned to RL.6.5 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
What this lesson teaches
A single sentence, stanza, or scene has a job in the larger text — it can set up a conflict, reveal a character, or turn the plot. Analyze what one part contributes and how removing it would change the whole.
Worked examples
Example 1
A one-line scene where a character quietly pockets a key seems minor, but it plants the escape that resolves the story. Cut that scene and the ending has no setup — proof the part carries the plot forward.
Example 2
A chapter that seems to be about a school dance is really where two characters stop speaking — the event is scenery, the silence is the plot.
Example 3
Ask what a scene would cost the story if you deleted it. If the answer is nothing, you have probably misread it.
Practice questions
- Pick one short scene or stanza and state its job in the whole text.
- Explain what the reader would miss if it were removed.
- Show how that part connects to the story's theme or turning point.

Cómo las Partes Construyen el Todo
Una sola oración, estrofa o escena cumple una función dentro del texto completo: puede plantear un conflicto, revelar a un personaje o dar un giro a la trama. Analiza qué aporta una parte y cómo cambiaría el todo si la quitaras.
Ejemplo 1: Una escena de una línea en la que un personaje guarda una llave en el bolsillo parece menor, pero prepara la fuga que resuelve la historia. Quita esa escena y el final se queda sin preparación — prueba de que la parte impulsa la trama.
Ejemplo 2: Un capítulo que parece ser sobre un baile escolar es en realidad donde dos personajes dejan de hablarse — el evento es el decorado, el silencio es la trama.
Ejemplo 3: Pregúntate qué perdería la historia si borraras una escena. Si la respuesta es nada, probablemente la leíste mal.
