How Plot and Characters Change
Aligned to RL.6.3 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
What this lesson teaches
Stories move through episodes — connected events that raise the stakes toward a resolution. Track how each event pushes characters to respond, and how those responses reveal them changing over time.
Worked examples
Example 1
In episode one a shy girl won't speak in class; a small win in episode two gives her nerve; by the resolution she volunteers first. The plot's rising events cause a clear change: timid to confident.
Example 2
A character who lies in chapter two to protect a friend has to keep lying in chapter nine to cover it. The plot does not just happen to him — his own choice built it.
Example 3
Not every character changes. One who ends exactly where he started, while everyone around him moves, is making a point too.
Practice questions
- List three key events in a story in the order they happen.
- For one event, explain how a character reacts and why.
- Describe how the main character is different at the end than at the start.

Cómo Cambian la Trama y los Personajes
Las historias avanzan por episodios: hechos conectados que elevan la tensión hacia una resolución. Sigue cómo cada hecho empuja a los personajes a reaccionar, y cómo esas reacciones muestran que van cambiando.
Ejemplo 1: En el primer episodio una niña tímida no habla en clase; un pequeño triunfo en el segundo le da valor; para la resolución es la primera en participar. Los hechos que suben la tensión provocan un cambio claro: de tímida a segura.
Ejemplo 2: Un personaje que miente en el capítulo dos para proteger a un amigo tiene que seguir mintiendo en el nueve para taparlo. La trama no solo le ocurre — su propia decisión la construyó.
Ejemplo 3: No todo personaje cambia. Uno que termina justo donde empezó, mientras todos a su alrededor se mueven, también está diciendo algo.
