What this lesson teaches

Use pronouns clearly so the reader knows who 'he,' 'she,' or 'they' refers to, and fix vague or shifting pronouns. Greek and Latin roots help you unlock the meaning of academic words.

Worked examples

Example 1

Vague: 'When Mia met Ana, she smiled' — who smiled? Better: 'When Mia met Ana, Mia smiled.' The root 'bio' means life, so 'biology' is the study of life.

Example 2

Vague: 'The coach told the captain he was benched' — who was benched? Better: 'The coach told the captain that Luis was benched.'

Example 3

The root 'dict' means say: dictate, predict, verdict, contradict. One root opens a family of words you have never looked up.

Practice questions

  1. Fix a sentence with an unclear pronoun.
  2. Define a word using its Greek or Latin root.
  3. Replace a vague 'it' with a specific noun.
