Dividing by Two-Digit Numbers

What this lesson teaches

To divide by a two-digit number, take away easy chunks of the divisor at a time. Ask how many groups of the divisor fit, subtract that much, then keep going with what is left. Add up the chunks to get the quotient.

Worked example

Divide 4,325 ÷ 25. First take 100 groups: 25 × 100 = 2,500, leaving 4,325 − 2,500 = 1,825. Next take 70 groups: 25 × 70 = 1,750, leaving 1,825 − 1,750 = 75. Then 3 groups: 25 × 3 = 75, leaving 0. Add the chunks: 100 + 70 + 3 = 173. So 4,325 ÷ 25 = 173.
