Unlocking Unknown Words

What this lesson teaches
When you meet a new word, use nearby clues, familiar roots and affixes, or a dictionary. Greek and Latin roots appear in many English words.
Worked examples
Example 1
You don't know 'biography.' The root 'bio' means life and 'graph' means writing, so a biography is writing about someone's life.
Example 2
You do not know 'geology.' 'Geo' means earth and 'logy' means the study of — so geology is the study of the earth.
Example 3
Context and roots together beat either alone. If the root guess does not fit the sentence, trust the sentence.
Practice questions
- Guess a word's meaning from its sentence, then check it.
- Use a root or prefix to define a new word.
- Look up one word and write its meaning.

Descifrar Palabras Desconocidas
