Producers, Consumers, and Choices
Aligned to C3.D2.Eco.2 — C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards.
What this lesson teaches
Producers make goods or provide services, and consumers buy and use them. Because resources and money are limited, this is called scarcity, so people must make choices. Whatever you give up when you choose is the opportunity cost.
Worked example
A baker is a producer who turns flour into bread; you are a consumer when you buy it. If you have five dollars and spend it on the bread, you cannot also buy a toy, so the toy is your opportunity cost.
Practice questions
- What is the difference between a producer and a consumer?
- Explain what scarcity is and why it forces people to make choices.
- You have money for only one of two things you want. Describe your choice and name the opportunity cost.

Productores, Consumidores y Decisiones
