Waves: Amplitude & Wavelength

What this lesson teaches
Waves carry energy. A wave's amplitude is its height (bigger amplitude = more energy, louder sound), and wavelength is the distance between peaks. Light and sound both travel as waves.
Worked examples
Example 1
Plucking a guitar string harder makes a louder note — same pitch, bigger amplitude. A bigger ocean wave (more amplitude) hits the shore with more force.
Example 2
A short, tight guitar string vibrates faster and makes a higher note; a long, loose string makes a lower one. That is wavelength, not amplitude.
Example 3
Waves carry energy without carrying the water along. A floating duck bobs up and down as a wave passes but stays in roughly the same spot.

Ondas: Amplitud y longitud de onda
Las ondas transportan energía. La amplitud de una onda es su altura (mayor amplitud = más energía, sonido más fuerte), y la longitud de onda es la distancia entre crestas. La luz y el sonido viajan como ondas.
Ejemplo 1: Rasgar una cuerda de guitarra con más fuerza produce una nota más fuerte — mismo tono, mayor amplitud. Una ola del océano más grande (mayor amplitud) golpea la orilla con más fuerza.
Ejemplo 2: Una cuerda de guitarra corta y tensa vibra más rápido y da una nota más aguda; una cuerda larga y floja da una más grave. Eso es la longitud de onda, no la amplitud.
Ejemplo 3: Las olas llevan energía sin llevarse el agua. Un pato flotando sube y baja al pasar una ola pero se queda más o menos en el mismo lugar.
