What this lesson teaches
In a big number, each place is worth ten times the place to its right. That is why moving a digit one spot left makes it ten times bigger. Knowing this lets you read large numbers, round them, and add or subtract numbers up to a million.
Worked example
In 5,300, the 3 is in the hundreds place, worth 300. Round 5,348 to the nearest hundred: the tens digit is 4, so round down to 5,300.
