Writing a Story

What this lesson teaches
A narrative is a story you write, real or imagined. Good ones have events in a clear order — a beginning, middle, and end — and use descriptive details, dialogue, and feelings to bring the moment to life for your reader.
Worked examples
Example 1
Instead of 'I was scared in the dark,' a strong writer shows it: 'My heart thumped as I reached for the light switch, and every creak of the floor made me freeze.'
Example 2
Instead of 'The crowd was loud,' show it: 'I shouted to my brother a foot away and he shook his head, still smiling, still not hearing me.'
Example 3
Dialogue moves a story faster than description. Two characters arguing tells you more in four lines than a paragraph about their relationship.
Practice questions
- Write the first three sentences of a story that puts a reader right into the action.
- Take a plain sentence like 'The dog ran' and add descriptive details to it.
- Plan a short story by listing its beginning, middle, and end.

Escribir un Cuento
Una narración es un cuento que escribes, real o imaginado. Los buenos cuentos tienen los eventos en un orden claro — principio, medio y final — y usan detalles descriptivos, diálogo y sentimientos para dar vida al momento para tu lector.
Ejemplo 1: En lugar de 'Tenía miedo en la oscuridad,' un buen escritor lo muestra: 'Mi corazón latía fuerte mientras buscaba el interruptor de la luz, y cada crujido del piso me hacía congelarme.'
Ejemplo 2: En vez de 'La multitud era ruidosa', muéstralo: 'Le grité a mi hermano a un paso de distancia y él negó con la cabeza, todavía sonriendo, todavía sin oírme.'
Ejemplo 3: El diálogo mueve un cuento más rápido que la descripción. Dos personajes discutiendo te dicen más en cuatro líneas que un párrafo sobre su relación.
