What this lesson teaches
Living things have traits that help them survive in their environment. Those better suited to a place are more likely to survive there.
Worked examples
Example 1
A polar bear's thick fur and white color help it stay warm and hidden in snow — adaptations for its cold habitat.
Example 2
A cactus stores water in its thick stem and has spines instead of leaves, so it loses very little water in the desert.
Example 3
An adaptation only helps in the right place. A polar bear's thick fur would be deadly in the desert.

Adaptación y supervivencia
Los seres vivos tienen características que los ayudan a sobrevivir en su ambiente. Los que están mejor adaptados a un lugar tienen más posibilidades de sobrevivir ahí.
Ejemplo 1: El pelaje grueso y el color blanco del oso polar le ayudan a mantenerse caliente y camuflarse en la nieve: son adaptaciones para su hábitat frío.
Ejemplo 2: Un cactus guarda agua en su tallo grueso y tiene espinas en vez de hojas, así pierde muy poca agua en el desierto.
Ejemplo 3: Una adaptación solo ayuda en el lugar correcto. El pelaje grueso de un oso polar sería mortal en el desierto.
