Reading Smoothly and Clearly

What this lesson teaches

Reading with fluency means reading at a steady pace, grouping words together, and using expression. If you misread a word, fix it and keep going.

Example 1

Reading 'The tired puppy fell fast asleep' smoothly — not word by word — and dropping your voice at the period sounds natural.

Example 2

'Stop!' she shouted, and the car slammed to a halt. — your voice rises on 'Stop!' and slows on the second half.

Example 3

Reading too fast is as unclear as reading too slow. Fluency is reading at the speed of talking, not the speed of racing.

Leer con fluidez significa leer a un ritmo constante, agrupar las palabras y usar expresión. Si lees mal una palabra, corrígela y sigue adelante.

Ejemplo 1: Leer 'El perrito cansado se quedó dormido' de corrido — no palabra por palabra — y bajar la voz en el punto suena natural.

Ejemplo 2: '¡Alto!' gritó ella, y el coche frenó de golpe. — tu voz sube en '¡Alto!' y se hace más lenta en la segunda mitad.

Ejemplo 3: Leer demasiado rápido es tan poco claro como leer demasiado lento. La fluidez es leer a velocidad de plática, no de carrera.
