Aligned to 2.G.A.2 — Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.

What this lesson teaches

You can split a rectangle into equal squares that make rows going across and columns going down. Count all the squares to find the total.

Worked example

A rectangle has 2 rows and 3 columns of squares. Count them: 3 + 3 = 6 squares in all.

Practice questions

  1. A rectangle has 3 rows and 4 columns. How many squares in all?
  2. If there are 2 rows of 5 squares, how many squares total?
  3. Draw a rectangle split into 2 rows and 2 columns. How many squares?
