What this lesson teaches
Advanced literary nonfiction — essays, arguments, and reportage — layers claim under narrative and hides structure inside style. Proficient readers separate what an author is doing from what an author is saying, mapping the argument beneath the prose.
Worked example
A magazine essay opens with a long story about a single stranded fisherman, and an inexperienced reader takes it as a human-interest anecdote; a proficient reader recognizes the fisherman as the essay's test case and reads every later paragraph as the general argument the story was chosen to prove.
Practice questions
- Identify what job a passage is doing — illustrating, conceding, arguing — beyond its literal content.
- Describe a strategy for finding the through-line when a text hides its claim inside a story.
- State the text's underlying argument in one sentence and cite the passage that carries it.
