What this lesson teaches
Many real measurements follow a normal distribution, the bell-shaped curve, where most values cluster near the mean. When estimating a population from a sample, the margin of error tells you how far off your estimate might reasonably be.
Worked example
A poll says 60% support a plan with a margin of error of 3%. That means the true support is likely between 57% and 63%.
Practice questions
- In a bell curve, where do most values fall?
- If a poll shows 45% with a 4% margin of error, give the likely range.
- Why do larger samples usually shrink the margin of error?
