What this lesson teaches
Foundational American works return to shared questions — freedom, identity, the frontier, the individual against society — from different eras and viewpoints. Comparing how two texts treat one theme reveals how the national conversation evolves.
Worked example
An early poem may celebrate the wilderness as freedom, while a later story treats the same frontier as loss — the same theme, opposite conclusions.
