Tracing Interacting Themes
Aligned to RL.11-12.2 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
What this lesson teaches
Complex literature carries more than one theme, and those themes shape each other as the plot unfolds. Tracking how two themes rise, collide, and resolve — and summarizing without inserting your opinion — reveals a work's deeper design.
Worked example
In a tale where ambition grows while loyalty erodes, the two themes trade places: each gain in power costs a friendship.
Practice questions
- Name two themes a work develops and where each first appears.
- Explain one point where the two themes influence each other.
- Write a three-sentence objective summary with no opinion.
