What this lesson teaches
Reading at the top of the 11–CCR band means staying with dense syntax, archaic diction, and layered structure without giving up. Independent readers use strategies — rereading, annotating, tracking pronouns — to build comprehension.
Worked example
Facing a long sentence with three clauses, you break it at each comma, restate each part plainly, then reassemble the whole meaning.
Practice questions
- Restate a difficult sentence in your own plain words.
- Track who 'he' or 'it' refers to across a dense paragraph.
- List two strategies for reading an unfamiliar older text.
