What this lesson teaches
Beginning in Britain around 1760, new machines powered by water and steam moved production from homes and workshops into large factories. This shift multiplied output and wealth, but it also pulled millions into crowded cities, put children to work in dangerous mills, and filled the air with coal smoke.

In the textile mills of Manchester, England, workers as young as eight tended spinning machines for fourteen hours a day, six days a week — conditions that pushed reformers to pass the first laws limiting child labor.
