What this lesson teaches
Nuclear changes alter the nucleus of an atom itself, unlike chemical changes that only rearrange atoms. Fission splits a heavy nucleus, fusion joins light nuclei, and radioactive decay releases particles over time, with the strong nuclear force holding nuclei together. These processes release enormous energy because a tiny bit of mass converts to energy.
Worked example
In the sun, hydrogen nuclei fuse into helium, releasing the energy that lights our sky, an example of fusion. On Earth, carbon-14 in a fossil decays at a known rate, so measuring how much is left lets scientists calculate the fossil's age.
