Find the Missing Number

What this lesson teaches

Sometimes a number is missing in a math sentence. We find the number that makes both sides equal.

Example 1

5 + ? = 8. Think: 5 plus what makes 8? 5 + 3 = 8, so the missing number is 3.

Example 2

? + 6 = 10. Think: what plus 6 makes 10? 4 + 6 = 10, so the missing number is 4.

Example 3

9 − ? = 2. Think: 9 take away what leaves 2? Taking away 7 leaves 2, so the missing number is 7.
