What this lesson teaches
Pictures in a story help us understand it. They show us the people, the place, and what is happening.
Worked examples
Example 1
A picture shows a girl holding an umbrella with rain falling. We know it is a rainy day, even before we read it.
Example 2
A picture shows a boy with a scarf and red cheeks. We know it is cold before any word says so.
Example 3
Sometimes the picture adds something the words leave out, like that the dog followed him the whole way.
Practice questions
- Look at a picture. Who do you see?
- What is the weather in the picture?
- Tell one thing the picture shows that the words do not.

Mira el Dibujo
Los dibujos de un cuento nos ayudan a entenderlo. Nos muestran a las personas, el lugar y lo que pasa.
Ejemplo 1: Un dibujo muestra a una niña con un paraguas y lluvia cayendo. Sabemos que es un día lluvioso, aun antes de leerlo.
Ejemplo 2: Un dibujo muestra a un niño con bufanda y las mejillas rojas. Sabemos que hace frío antes de que una palabra lo diga.
Ejemplo 3: A veces el dibujo agrega algo que las palabras no dicen, como que el perro lo siguió todo el camino.
