Language & Cultural Comparisons

Aligned to ACTFL Comparisons — ACTFL World-Readiness Standards.

What this lesson teaches

At an advanced level you analyze how the language and culture both resemble and differ from your own, including how language reflects worldview, formality, and social norms. Reflecting on these differences also helps you see your own language and culture more clearly, a hallmark of a globally aware adult.

Worked example

Spanish has two words for 'you', 'tu' for friends and 'usted' for formality and respect, which reveals how the culture marks social relationships in a way English does not.

Practice questions

  1. Give an example of how a language can show formality.
  2. How can studying another culture help you understand your own?
  3. Why does language shape the way people think?
