Theatre: advanced acting & audition technique

Aligned to NCAS:Pr — National Core Arts Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Advanced actors build characters in depth using recognized techniques, perform demanding roles, and prepare monologues and auditions for productions or college programs. Polished acting and audition skills are essential for serious theatre and develop poise, emotional intelligence, and public-speaking mastery.

Worked example

To prepare a monologue you study the character's wants and history, make specific choices for each line, and rehearse it until the audition feels like living the moment, not reciting.

Practice questions

  1. Choose a monologue and identify what the character wants.
  2. Make a specific acting choice for each beat of a speech.
  3. Why is researching a character important before performing?
