Media Arts: media, society, ethics & law

Aligned to NCAS:Cn — National Core Arts Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Media shapes society through algorithms, AI, and representation, and creators face real questions of intellectual property and ethics. Deep media literacy is essential citizenship in an AI- and algorithm-driven world, and understanding law and consent protects you as both a creator and a consumer.

Worked example

An algorithm decides which videos you see next, quietly shaping your views. As a creator, using someone's music or likeness without permission can cross legal and ethical lines.

Practice questions

  1. Explain how an algorithm shapes what you see online.
  2. What ethical issues come with AI-generated content?
  3. Why does consent matter when using someone's image or work?
