What this lesson teaches

A credit card is a short-term loan you take every time you use it. Paid in full each month, it costs nothing and builds your credit history. Carried from month to month, it charges some of the highest interest in consumer finance. The card is not the problem; the balance is.

Worked examples

Example 1

Charge $300 and pay $300 by the due date: you pay no interest and the on-time payment is reported, which builds your score.

Example 2

Carry that $300 at 26% APR while paying $30 a month and it takes about 11 months and costs roughly $40 in interest for nothing.

Example 3

A secured card, where you put down a deposit that becomes your limit, is how people with no history start. Six months of on-time payments usually opens the door to a regular card.

Practice questions

  1. Explain how to use a credit card so it costs you nothing.
  2. Calculate one month of interest on a $600 balance at 24% APR.
  3. How could someone with no credit history start building one?
