How computers work: hardware, software, and abstraction layers

What this lesson teaches
At the lowest level, computers represent all information in binary, just ones and zeros that stand for on and off. From there, layers build on each other: hardware, then the operating system that manages it, then the applications you use. Abstraction is what makes this possible, each layer hides its messy details so the layer above can be built simply, letting us create very complex systems from simple parts.
Worked example
Think of a postal system. You just write an address and drop a letter in a box (the app layer). You do not need to know the trucks, sorting machines, and routes (lower layers) that actually deliver it. Each layer trusts the one below to do its job.

Cómo funcionan las computadoras: hardware, software y capas de abstracción
En el nivel más básico, las computadoras representan toda la información en binario, solo unos y ceros que significan encendido y apagado. A partir de ahí, las capas se construyen unas sobre otras: el hardware, luego el sistema operativo que lo administra, y después las aplicaciones que usas. La abstracción es lo que hace esto posible: cada capa oculta sus detalles complicados para que la capa superior pueda construirse de forma sencilla, permitiéndonos crear sistemas muy complejos a partir de partes simples.
Ejemplo: Imagina el sistema de correo postal. Tú solo escribes una dirección y depositas una carta en un buzón (la capa de la aplicación). No necesitas saber nada sobre los camiones, las máquinas clasificadoras ni las rutas (las capas inferiores) que realmente la entregan. Cada capa confía en que la que está debajo hará su trabajo.
