Cybersecurity, encryption, and protecting accounts

Aligned to CSTA-NI — CSTA K-12 Computer Science Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Networks are constantly attacked and defended. Encryption scrambles data so that only someone with the right key can read it, protecting your messages and passwords as they travel. Authentication proves who you are, and two-factor authentication adds a second check, like a code from your phone, so a stolen password alone is not enough. Many attacks are social engineering, like phishing, that try to trick you rather than break the math.

Worked example

A text says your bank account is locked and links to a login page. The link is misspelled and creates urgency to make you panic. That is phishing. Because you use two-factor authentication, even if a scammer got your password, they still could not log in without the code on your phone.

Practice questions

  1. What problem does two-factor authentication solve that a password alone cannot?
  2. Describe how you would spot a phishing message.
  3. Why is encryption important when data travels across a network?
