Dance: dance across cultures & meaning

Aligned to NCAS:Cn — National Core Arts Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Dances carry the history, values, and stories of the cultures they come from. Comparing forms from around the world shows how movement means different things in different places. It also matters to tell respectful appreciation apart from appropriation, by learning the meaning and giving credit.

Worked example

Many traditional dances mark important events, like a harvest or a wedding, and the steps themselves hold meaning passed down for generations, not just a routine.

Practice questions

  1. Research a dance from another culture and what it celebrates.
  2. How can a dance tell a story or carry history?
  3. What is the difference between appreciation and appropriation?
