The Trades Up Close: Six Careers Worth Knowing
Aligned to CTE:CC-7 — Jump$tart National Standards in K-12 Personal Finance Education & Advance CTE Career Clusters.

What this lesson teaches
Skilled trades are licensed, in demand, and hard to automate, because the work happens in a different building every day. Each has its own training path, its own tools, and its own reason the work cannot wait. Knowing what the day actually looks like is how you find out whether it fits you.
Worked examples
Example 1
An electrician installs and repairs wiring, works from code books as much as tools, and must be licensed because the mistakes are fires. Training is typically a 4-5 year apprenticeship.
Example 2
An HVAC technician diagnoses heating and cooling systems, which means electrical, refrigerant and airflow all at once. The work is busiest in the hottest and coldest weeks of the year.
Example 3
A welder joins metal for structures, pipelines and ships. Certifications are specific — a welder certified for one process and position must test again for another, which is why certified welders are paid for exactly what they are certified to do.
Practice questions
- Pick two trades and describe what a workday looks like for each.
- Why do several trades require a license by law?
- What would you want to ask someone who does one of these jobs?
