Using the Language With Others
Aligned to ACTFL Communities — ACTFL World-Readiness Standards.
What this lesson teaches
The best part of learning a language is using it with real people for a real reason. You might greet a speaker, write to a pen pal, or order your food in the language at a restaurant. Even a short, real use makes the language feel meaningful and helps it stick.
Worked example
At a Mexican restaurant you could tell the server, 'Quiero tacos, por favor' (I want tacos, please) instead of pointing at the menu.
Practice questions
- Think of one real place you could use the language.
- What could you say to a pen pal in another language?
- Why does using the language for real make it more fun to learn?
