Ways to Earn Money

What this lesson teaches
Money comes from doing work someone else values. At your age that might be an allowance for chores, or a small job for a neighbor. The pattern is the same as a grown-up job: you agree on the work and the pay before you start, then you do what you agreed.
Worked examples
Example 1
A neighbor pays you $5 to rake their leaves. You agreed on the price and the job before you started, so nobody is surprised at the end.
Example 2
Two jobs can pay the same but take very different time. $10 for two hours of yard work is $5 an hour; $10 for walking a dog twice is much more per hour.
Example 3
If you do not finish what you agreed to, you do not get paid the full amount. That is true at 10 and at 30.
Practice questions
- List three ways someone your age could earn money.
- Pick one and work out how much you would earn per hour.
- Why is it important to agree on the pay before the work starts?
