What this lesson teaches

Cooking is following a set of steps in order, with amounts that matter. Reading the whole recipe before you start tells you what you need and what happens when. A few safety rules — clean hands, separate raw meat, cook it through — prevent almost every kitchen problem.

Worked examples

Example 1

A recipe says 'preheat the oven to 350°F' as step one. Reading ahead means the oven is hot when the pan is ready, not 15 minutes later.

Example 2

Baking amounts are not suggestions. Doubling the baking soda in muffins does not make them fluffier; it makes them taste like soap.

Example 3

The cutting board that touched raw chicken cannot then be used for salad without washing. That single habit prevents most home food poisoning.

Practice questions

  1. Read a simple recipe and list everything you need before starting.
  2. Why do you read the whole recipe first?
  3. Name two food-safety rules and what each one prevents.

Cocina básica: recetas, medidas y seguridad alimentaria
