What this lesson teaches
Governments differ in who holds power and how it is limited. In a democracy citizens choose leaders and rights are protected; in a monarchy power is inherited; in fascism a dictator and one party dominate the nation; in communism a single party controls the state and economy in the name of the working class.
Worked example
During the Cold War, democratic West Germany held free elections while communist East Germany was ruled by one party and walled its citizens in behind the Berlin Wall.
