What this lesson teaches
Organisms depend on each other and their environment. Matter cycles (carbon, water) and energy flows through food webs. Changes to one population ripple through the whole system.
Worked examples
Example 1
If a disease wipes out rabbits, foxes that eat them decline, while plants the rabbits ate grow unchecked — interdependence means one change affects many.
Example 2
Decomposers close the loop: fungi and bacteria break dead matter back into nutrients that plants take up again.
Example 3
Energy flows one way and is lost as heat at every step; matter cycles round and round. That is why ecosystems need constant sunlight but not constant new atoms.

Materia y energía en los ecosistemas
Los organismos dependen unos de otros y de su entorno. La materia se cicla (carbono, agua) y la energía fluye a través de las redes alimentarias. Los cambios en una población se propagan por todo el sistema.
Ejemplo 1: Si una enfermedad elimina a los conejos, los zorros que se alimentan de ellos disminuyen, mientras que las plantas que los conejos comían crecen sin control — la interdependencia significa que un cambio afecta a muchos.
Ejemplo 2: Los descomponedores cierran el ciclo: hongos y bacterias descomponen la materia muerta en nutrientes que las plantas vuelven a tomar.
Ejemplo 3: La energía fluye en un solo sentido y se pierde como calor en cada paso; la materia circula una y otra vez. Por eso los ecosistemas necesitan luz solar constante pero no átomos nuevos constantes.
