What this lesson teaches
Earth's resources like minerals, oil, and fresh water are not spread out evenly because of the geologic processes that formed them over millions of years. That is why some regions have a lot of a resource and others have almost none. Scientists also monitor natural hazards to warn people and reduce harm.
Worked example
Large oil deposits sit underground in places where ancient seas once buried huge amounts of tiny organisms, like the Middle East. That past geology is why oil is plentiful there and scarce in many other regions.
