Aligned to C3.D2.His — C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards.

What this lesson teaches

European colonies grew in North America, then conflict with Britain over taxes and rights led the colonies to declare independence in 1776 and fight the Revolutionary War.

Worked example

Britain taxed the colonies (e.g., the Stamp Act) without their representation in Parliament. Protests like the Boston Tea Party escalated to war and the Declaration of Independence.

Practice questions

  1. Why did colonists object to British taxes?
  2. What did the Declaration of Independence announce?
  3. Put three Revolution-era events in order.
