Rights, Responsibilities, and Citizenship

What this lesson teaches
Citizens share both rights, like the freedom to speak and vote, and responsibilities, like following laws and helping the community. People take part in their state by voting, volunteering, and speaking up about what they believe.
Worked example
An adult uses her right to vote to choose a mayor, then meets her responsibility by serving on a jury and picking up litter at a neighborhood cleanup day.
Practice questions
- Name one right and one responsibility that citizens share.
- Explain why rights and responsibilities go together in a community.
- Choose one way people can take part in their community and explain how it makes the community better.

Derechos, Responsabilidades y Ciudadanía
Los ciudadanos comparten tanto derechos, como la libertad de hablar y votar, como responsabilidades, como cumplir las leyes y ayudar a la comunidad. Las personas participan en su estado votando, siendo voluntarias y expresando lo que creen.
Ejemplo: Una adulta usa su derecho al voto para elegir a un alcalde, y luego cumple con su responsabilidad al servir en un jurado y recoger basura en un día de limpieza del vecindario.
